Above is a short informational video about the breed. I do not own any rights to this video.
How big will one of your puppies get? Do you breed superior sized or European Dobermans?
My puppies will usually grow to an estimated 70-100 pounds, and the males tend to be on the larger end. The boys from my last litter have reached about 100 lbs in their adulthood. We adhere to the breed standards set by the DPCA, which is the only AKC recognized Doberman breed club. There is much confusion and difference in opinion about size. The Doberman is a medium sized dog, and oversized dobes do not fit the breed standard. European lines does not necessarily translate to large or big boned, and our dogs have a mix of European, American, and Canadian lines. If you are curious about or interested in a large Doberman, I recommend reading this article about oversized, or Warlock Dobermans.
Do the puppies have to get their tails docked and ears cropped?
There seems to be some mystery among the public regarding the cropping and docking of Dobermans, and I probably hear this question the most.
Short answer: my puppies' tails will always be docked. Ears are optional for cropping, but must be done with my vet.
Longer answer:
The majority of reputable Doberman breeders would say absolutely and that it is part of the AKC breed standard (although uncropped ear is merely a deviation from the standard, rather than a disqualification). If we are talking about a Doberman who is not going to be used as a working dog or be shown, I believe that having the ears cropped is still the ideal choice, but should be left up to the owner of the dog. Having your puppy's ears cropped requires a commitment to taping and posting for at least six months. You will be responsible for all of the care your dog needs to get and keep his/her ears healthy and standing. Ear cropping helps with sound localization which is critical for a working dog. My personal belief is that ear cropping for pet dogs is a primarily a cosmetic election, but it can also help prevent certain conditions from affecting the ears (i.e mites and ear infections).. As you can see, I left my dog Lola's ears natural (there's an unusual reason why, you can ask me about it).
I suggest reading this breeder's page on cropping and docking; it's very well written and explains the pros and cons in greater depth.
Could one of your puppies do well in a family with small children, other dogs, cats, etc?
Yes, but with careful considerations. Socializing your puppy is key if you want them to be comfortable with children and other animals. A Doberman can make the most loyal and loving family companion while still being a good watch dog or protection dog. It is your responsibility to use consistent and proper training methods. I constantly receive compliments on the good manner and gentle nature of my dogs. I personally believe that If you have small children, raising a dog from puppyhood around them is a good choice. I do not recommend housing a Doberman with another same sex dog as they can sometimes be prone to competition. Neutering/spaying does not always eliminate the possibility of having this problem.
Can I purchase a puppy if I live in an apartment or do not have a backyard?
Upon filling out a puppy application, I will request detailed information about your living situation. While I think that a Doberman could do just fine in an apartment or home without a yard, so long as his exercise needs are being met, there are concerns. Anyone who lives in a professionally managed building or has a HOA will likely be subject to breed restrictions. Dobermans are always on the "restricted breed" lists. As much as I strongly disagree with breed exclusions, prospective Doberman owners should be aware of the trouble this can cause if they live in or ever move to one of these properties. I will evaluate each application on a case by case basis, but I will require proof that you are allowed to have a Doberman in your residence.
Reserving and picking your puppy:
Your pick will be on a "first come first serve" basis
I am no longer keeping a running wait list. My puppies tend to be reserved long before they arrive due to high demand and few numbers of litters produced.
I will only accept a limited number of deposits upon confirmed pregnancy. If I do not have enough puppies for all depositors, or if I cannot match you with a puppy you desire then a refund will be promptly issued. You will need to select your puppy by the time they have reached five weeks of age. I will do everything I can to help you choose the right puppy for you and your situation.
The remainder of the purchase price is due in full upon picking up your puppy, at no earlier than 8 weeks of age. If you do not want your pup's ears to be cropped you must make arrangements to pay the non-refundable purchase price in full upon choosing your pup, and payment must be received before he/she reaches six weeks of age.
About pricing and what is included:
Pricing for future litters is to be determined, but generally falls within the range of $3300-$3900.
How do you determine prices for puppies?
Here is an independent article that I recommend reading about buying a Doberman puppy and pricing. We really want you to consider that dogs are always a long term commitment, and that there are many costs over the years for food/supplies and veterinary care. Purebred dogs of any breed tend to have more genetic health risks than dogs of mixed breeds. If you have been searching for a well bred Doberman, you may have noticed that prices can vary greatly. Our commitment to selective breeding, health screenings, and providing the best care available to our dogs and puppies helps assure us and our buyers that they are getting a puppy who will be much less likely to suffer from potentially devastating and expensive health issues in the future. Our belief is that a puppy from us will perhaps cost more now, but much less later in life. We back up this belief with a comprehensive health guarantee, which includes many of the common (sometimes very serious) conditions Dobermans are prone to. Some conditions can be ruled out completely with testing while some cannot. We encourage prospective owners, no matter where you choose to acquire your Doberman, to research these health conditions and make an informed purchase. Again, the DPCA.org is a great place to start.
Always included in puppy price:
-Appropriate vaccines at six and eight weeks of age
-Microchipped
-Dewormed at appropriate intervals
-Full one year health guarantee and a limited lifetime health guarantee. You may request a copy of our guarantee prior to deposit or purchase.
-Dewclaws will be removed and tails will be docked within the first couple days of birth.
-We will supply a ten pound bag of food so that you can use it to change him/her over gradually to whatever you will feed your pup.
-If you've elected ear cropping, all after care supplies will be included. I am willing to travel within 20 miles to assist you in posting the ears if you need help. If you are not local I can help match you with a breeder or vet who can help.
Are the puppies AKC registered?
By default, puppies will come with a limited AKC registration. If you would like full registration there is no additional charge, but I will give it out to approved show or working homes only. The difference is that full registration allows the buyer to show the dog in confirmation and breed him/her, while the limited registration carries no breeding rights. However, dogs who are on limited registration can still compete in other AKC events such as obedience and agility trials. We believe that selling puppies with limited registration is an important part of a responsibile breeding program.
Once you register your puppy with the AKC, you will get a free first vet exam, a limited time trial of pet health insurance and a discounted AKC Reunite membership. AKC has been offering this for years now, but I cannot guarantee these registration perks as they are subject to change at anytime and are out of my control.
Please note:
Danielle's Dobermans reserves the right to deny an application for a puppy at any time for any reason. A puppy will not be sold or transferred without an approved application. We welcome all to apply, who can provide proper care and a loving forever home to one of our dogs, and we do not discriminate on the basis of an applicant's color, religion, familial status, sexual orientation, or any other personally identifying factors. We will NOT under any circumstances sell any puppies to a pet store/retailer or to any individual for the purpose of resale.
